Serendipity–the occurrence of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.
Brandon and Kelly meeting six years ago was exactly that. Brandon lived in North Carolina and Kelly in Georgia. A common love of music sent them both across the country, going from one audition to the next, each hoping they would make it into a college music program. As fate would have it, Brandon and his mother sat down for his audition at Indiana University right in front of Kelly. Both mama’s got to talking and soon discovered they were both from NC. Everyone made small talk and stayed in touch after the audition, but they never really thought they’d see each other again.
Thankfully, they were wrong.
Another stroke of good fortune landed them each at a music school in the windy city. Since neither of them really knew anyone else in Chicago they kept in touch throughout their freshman year. Kelly struck up the nerve to ask Brandon to her spring sorority formal and they’ve been together every moment thereafter. Although Kelly may have asked Brandon out first, Brandon’s elaborate and romantic proposal made up for it! It’s so sweet, we want Brandon to tell you about it himself —
“One of the best things about having a partner for life is that you constantly teach each other new things. For me, one of those things was that it was important to Kelly that she have her nails done before getting engaged. Since Kelly and I strive to make each other’s dreams come true, I had Kelly’s friend Liz convince Kelly to get her nails done with her on the night of the proposal. Before Kelly left for her nail appointment, I told her that I was going to hang out with some friends at a bar, and that she should meet me for a burger at one of our favorite restaurants after she got done.
The minute Kelly left for her nail appointment, my buddies and I frantically gathered all of the necessary supplies, one of them being my kitchen table, to set up for my big proposal. (The proposal location needs some prefacing – Kelly and I went to a few places on our first date, and one of them was the top of the Children’s Memorial Hospital parking garage in Lincoln Park. Everyone in the neighborhood knows that this parking garage has the most beautiful, unobstructed view of downtown Chicago) After jumping a few hurdles, we made place settings, put up the string lights, and placed the champagne on ice. Just as we finished, Kelly texted and I sprinted down the parking garage with just enough time to meet her across the street for our burger date. When Kelly got out of her Lyft, I told her that one of our friends had parked in the garage and needed us to check and see if he put his parking tab in his dash. She took the bait.
As we started walking I reminded her that we had come to this same parking garage on our first date and we should go to the top for old times’ sake. We finally arrived at the top where she could see the entire setup, with string lights and music. We walked over to the table and I told her how much I loved her and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, however long or short. After struggling to open the ring box (there is only one way to open a ring box, and somehow finding that way was difficult for me), I got down on one knee and asked Kelly to marry me. She said “yes,” and I put the ring on her finger. The moment was everything we dreamed it would be. Aside from a brief run-in with the security guard, we lived in that moment just the two of us. The time we had talked excitedly about for so long had finally come, and we felt as though we were the only two people in the world. It was a night that we would happily relive again and again forever.”
Brandon + Kelly: thank you for keeping all of us hopeless romantics believing that a moment of serendipity can happen at any time, if we keep our eyes and hearts open. Your wedding was as much of a fairy tale, if not more, as your proposal and we are honored to have been a part of it!
